Navigating Dubai’s roads and car services on New Year’s Eve

Dubai, the UAE’s main commercial hub, is preparing for the New Year. Roads would be congested ahead of New Year’s Eve, especially in popular locations such as downtown Dubai, the Burj Khalifa and the Palm Jumeirah.

Negotiate traffic

The roads can be congested; Road closures and traffic diversions are the order of the day. Therefore, plan your route in advance. Pay attention to notifications from the Road and Transport Authority (RTA).

If possible, avoid rush hour traffic between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

GPS or Google Maps can help find alternative routes to avoid rush hour traffic.

If you want to navigate traffic without offending others, you have to be patient and accept delays. Follow the rules and drive safely to enjoy the incredible light shows, fireworks, dancing, music and shopping. During rush hour, using public transportation such as subways and buses or using car rental companies such as Careem or Uber may be helpful. Avoid driving under the influence of alcohol. If you plan to drink alcohol, you should consider hiring a driver or vehicle service.

Car maintenance

Keep the vehicle in good operating condition to avoid unexpected breakdowns or repairs.

  • Regular service: If the car needs regular maintenance, you can’t afford to miss it before New Year’s Eve.

Vehicle maintenance checklist

  • Oil change: If the oil is dirty, it should be changed to prevent engine damage. Or fill it up to the required level.
  • Fluid refills: Make sure all fluids such as coolant, brake fluid and windshield washer fluid are sufficient.
  • Battery: Check voltage, connector corrosion and circuits to avoid unexpected failures.
  • Tires: Make sure the tread depth and tire pressure are adequate, and remember to rotate the tires to prevent uneven wear.
  • First aid kit and tools: There should be a first aid kit in the car containing bandages, antiseptic solutions, gauze and cotton wool.

Have jumper cables for battery repair and basic tools like a jack, lug wrench, and screwdrivers on hand. Have a flashlight with extra batteries ready to work in the dark.

Regular Car maintenance includes an inspection of engine oil and fluids, brakes, suspension, batteries, tires and other components. With a little planning and attention, you can have a memorable and enjoyable New Year’s Eve in Dubai.

As Dubai prepares for its breathtaking New Year’s Eve events, you need to plan ahead to avoid traffic congestion. Sheikh Zayed Road, Burj Khalifa Street and Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard will be closed on December 31 at 4:00 p.m. To make things easier, consider boarding the Dubai Metro, which runs non-stop from 5:00 a.m. on December 31st to midnight on January 1st. And if public transportation isn’t your thing, don’t worry. There are 29,000 taxis available to help you get around the city.
